Medications

In most cases, medications will be recommended to treat acute low back pain. The medicines most commonly suggested include:

  • acetaminophen
  • NSAIDS, which are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naprosyn
  • prescription pain relievers
  • prescription muscle relaxants

It’s important to note that over the counter medications can interact with other medicines, nutritional supplements, and herbal remedies. Be sure to talk with your health care provider or pharmacist about all of the medications that you are currently taking. Also be sure to take all medications as directed.
